Fred Archer has written about country life between 1768 and 1813, his characters are fictitious, but as real as Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and any countryman over the age of 60 will have met types such as his squires, his hunting parsons, his tenant farmers and the labourers who knew the reality of near starvation. His village 'Ayshon' is Ashton in the Evesham Vale, remote, and overshadowed by Bredon Hill. 3. Very Good/Very Good.

This is the true account of the life of a poacher, based in North Staffordshire. It covers a period of around 50 years from boyhood to quite recent times. In perspective, poaching is shown as a product of the depression years although, obviously, the love of the countryside and the excitement of eluding gamekeepers and the law are important factors. The methods used for day and night-time poaching are all explained. The characters of the countryside - the good and the bad- are examined. Brushes with police and gamekeepers; the irony and the humour are all intertwined. Common myths and fallacies are criticized, and the author writes from experience, pulling no punches. Not dated but release date by publisher was 1979. 31 colour and black and white phot illustrations and map endpapers. After many years of research of the dry salt Lake Eyre in Australia the author and her geologist husband witnessed, in 1974, a new face caused by floodwaters which turned it into a proper lake and regenerated the surrounding desert area with lush growth with waterfowl and wildflowers appearing. This period of transformation is expertly documented up to the lake's return to it's dry state. A1E. Fine/Very Good. Signed by Author.
